The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear on April 24 a plea seeking an independent inquiry into the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmedand his brother Ashraf in Prayagraj on April 15.
The petition filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari has sought the setting up of an independent committee under a retired Supreme Court judge to probe the killings.
The killing, which took place at around 10.30 pm, was captured live on camera even as the two brothers were answering questions posed by reporters. Their remand in police custody, which began on April 13, was to end at 5 pm on April 16. The killers posed as journalists to sneak into the crowd and shoot the duo.
The shooters and one of their associates surrendered to the police immediately after firing several rounds at the brothers using semi-automatic pistols. The police said the accused came in a motorcycle and that later they recovered a mike with NCR News written on it as well as a camera from their possession.
