The Delhi Police have denied permission to the Congress to hold a day-long sit-in at the Mahatma Gandhi memorial Rajghat Sunday to protest the disqualification of Rahul Gandhias a member of Lok Sabha.

He added, “It has become a habit for the Modi govt to disallow every opposition protest… This will not deter us, our fight for truth, against tyranny, goes on.”

Venugopal tweeted a letter received by the party from the office of the deputy commissioner of police, Central district.

“I have been directed to inform you that your information regarding sit on a Satyagrah at Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi Rajghat by the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee…has been considered and rejected due to law and order and traffic reasons…” [sic] the letter said.

The letter added prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were put in place in and around Rajghat, and any kind of congregation of more than five people would be illegal and not permitted.

Police officials said protest outside the memorial has never been allowed. However, since protesters have gathered, the police said they would maintain law and order by deploying more personnel in the area.

“The party members can protest but if it turns violent or aggressive, we will have to detain people since we had already denied them the permission for the same,” said an officer.

Senior Congress leaders, including AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were planning to sit on a satyagraha at Rajghat Sunday. Simultaneously, sit-in protests were being planned in front of Mahatma Gandhi statues in all states and district headquarters from 10 am to 5 pm.
